Subtle Lustre: The History of Metalpoint Drawing, a talk at The Arts Society Mallorca

  • Golf Son Mutaner 38 Cami Son Vida, Palma de Mallorca Mallorca 07013 (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

As announced, by The Arts Society Mallorca, In her illustrated talk on the history of metalpoint drawing, Cook traces the chequered development of this medium from its earliest mentions in Roman times to its increased use in medieval monasteries and the early Renaissance to its virtual oblivion in the 17th century. Its later renaissances, first in the 19th century, thanks to the chance discovery of Cennino Cennini’s manuscript in Italian archives, and later in the 20th century, courtesy of an innovative museum curator in the United States, ensure that today, it is an unusual but compelling drawing medium that is the antithesis of our hyped technicolour world.

"Oro, Incienso o Mirra?" Group Exhibition to Celebrate the Holidays

Whilst it seems rather strange to open a group exhibition during a time of increasing covid cases, with a 10 p.m. curfew and no restaurants nor bars after 6 p.m., the evening was really fun and well attended. There were people queueing outside in the soft evening until they were allowed in, given the limited numbers allowed. Everyone masked, in good humour and eager to savour of one of the rare art exhibitions opening in Mallorca at present.

Sencelles is a lovely small town in the centre of the island of Mallorca; the townhall’s Casal de Cultura de Can Grau is a beautifully converted, spacious old town house that now serves as an exhibition space in the centre of town.

I love it when art defies the prevailing gloom and menace of covid. So important, so sustaining. Well worth celebrating such efforts by artists who go on believing that even in confinement, isolation or just general covid-mandated solitude, they should keep creating and believing in a better tomorrow.

Vernissage - Opening Reception for Terratorium exhibition

A torrential rain storm and hail were the prelude to the opening of my exhibition, Terratorium, at the Musée-Galérie Carnot in Villeneuve-sur-Yonne, Burgundy! Nonetheless, lots of people came, were passionate art lovers and fascinated by metalpoint. What more could one ask of a vernissage?

Workshop: Drawing in Gold & Silver

Learn the medieval art of metalpoint drawing from Jeannine Cook, one of the world’s few modern masters of this ancient pre-graphite drawing technique. Working on prepared paper with silver, gold, or copper, the subtle shimmering slow-art method is deeply meditative and yields stunning tonal results.
