Calling out the Patterns I
watercolour 7 x 6” image
I have always been fascinated by the stories of carpet makers, usually very young people with deft, strong hands, knotting carpets to the chant of pattern callers.
This painting is based on an oriental tribal carpet. In each part, nothing in the pattern is truly symmetrical as was originally probably intended. I like to think that each carpet maker was lost in another world of thoughts as his fingers worked swiftly, only vaguely paying attention to the pattern being called out. |
